Objective: The early and accurate diagnosis of depression and anxiety in Parkinson¡¯s disease is the first step for Parkinson¡¯s disease towards optimal patient management. Parkinson¡¯s disease (PD) has a high incidence of psychiatric comorbidity, specifically depression and anxiety. Thus, this study examined the feasibility of a telephone-based disease management program.
Methods: The study included 46 participants, between 53 and 77 years old, who were diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson¡¯s disease (IPD) and suffering from depression and/or anxiety. Patients were attending a department of outpatient neurology at D University Schools of Medicine in B Metropolitan City. A structured telephone-based disease management program was conducted for 8 weeks. A repeated measure ANOVA was used to analyze results at pretest, post-test, and 4 weeks follow up.
Results: According to service method, there were significant differences between the two groups and times in depression (p<.05). Analysis of the interaction between time and service method revealed significant differences between the two groups in depression and self-efficacy (p<.05).
Conclusion: The results suggest that telephone-based disease management program facilitates the improvement of depression and self-efficacy in patients with Parkinson¡¯s disease. The results also indicated that the delivery of a disease management program via the telephone was a useful approach for targeting psychiatric symptoms in this population.
